The Namaqua Region is found in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. It spans the whole western side of the Northern Cape and is famous for the wild flowers which put on a spectacular natural flower show in early spring.
Every year this region becomes a kaleidoscope of colour when the wild flowers bloom. A large number of the flowers found here are also unique to this area.
Springbok becomes the hub of the flower route during this time. It is also a great halfway stop over if one is travelling to Windhoek from Cape Town and lies 120km south of the Namibian border. Springbok serves as the administrative centre for the Namaqua Region. The town has its origins in copper mining dating back to the mid 1800's.
Along the southern border of the Namaqua Region one finds Sutherland. This small town is home to the South African Astronomical Observatory, the largest single telescope in the southern hemisphere. Tours can be arranged to see the awesome starry skies, but booking is essential. This quaint town is becoming a popular destination to escape from the fast-paced city life. Sutherland is also the coldest place in South Africa during winter. Calvinia, just further north of Sutherland, is another popular astronomer's destination and is one of the largest wool producing areas in South Africa. Both these towns offer good accommodation in a number of Bed & Breakfast establishments.
The Namaqua National Park and Ai Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park offer visitors a chance to enjoy the natural wildlife of the region. Both parks have good overnight fascilities. The Ai Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park boasts a rugged beauty and dramatic landscapes and is a popular destination amongst 4x4 enthusiasts. This dry land sustains a remarkable number of animal and plant species. A number of outdoor activities can be enjoyed in the Namaqua Region, including 4x4 adventures, river rafting or canoeing trips on the Orange River and hiking in the reserves. It is also a wonderful area to unwind and enjoy the peacful atmosphere and fresh air.
